Blog entry: May 25, 2025; star trek movies
so recently i watched the first 6 star trek movies (the ones with kirk's crew)
honestly they were all pretty good, even if some were more goofy
this is my first time watching them, but i've seen all of the original series (even if i don't remember a lot of it)
so i thought i'd give a quick rating of each and my opinions
- star trek: the motion picture - definitely my favorite, this movie was super cool and all the visuals looked awesome. i heard some people have issues with the pacing but i thought it was finely paced, like sure it's slow but it felt like that's part of its charm.
- star trek ii: the wrath of khan - honestly the most i can say about it is it was okay. i guess it was good action movie but it just kinda felt like things were just happening, things rarely felt like they had weight. maybe i just succumbed to hype surrounding it but idk, i just didn't see the appeal
- star trek iii: the search for spock - i really enjoyed this movie, even if the effects were a bit worse than the previous two movies. i rarely enjoy when resurections are done in movies, but i felt it was done decently in this movie, and i like how it built on the last one.
- star trek iv: the voyage home - this movie was super goofy, but not tooooo bad. it was the only movie i watched in two seperate sittings but even so i thought it was silly
- star trek v: the final frontier - this one sucked (positive). i enjoyed it a lot, and i found kirk, spock, and bones being prisoners on their own ship and having to sneak around with scotty was super cool, and the opening scene was awesome. the rest of the movie was a bit goofy and the ending felt real rushed, but it was still a good time.
- star trek vi: the undiscovered country - i think this one was my second favorite, after the first. i really enjoyed the whole plot around the mystery (even if i figured out part of it pretty quickly bc of how characters were focused on) but overall i thought it was really cool, and i love how the ending drives the universe forward. i really enjoyed how it built on some of kirk's feelings from the third movie, it made him feel like a more complex character (which i felt was lacking in the second movie). my one major complaint is it felt like the klingon court scene dragged on a bit.
overall rankings (imo):
1. star trek: the motion picture
2. star trek vi: the undiscovered country
3. star trek iii: the search for spock
4. star trek ii: the wrath of khan
5. star trek v: the final frontier
6. star trek iv: the voyage home
as of now i don't have any plans to watch the other movies since i've not heard good things
